However, after gaining explosive popularity as a user-centric service, YouTube was acquired by Google in 2006 and, with the help of massive capital and technological capabilities, was transformed into a more sophisticated platform. Google’s acquisition brought about changes that went far beyond a simple injection of funds. As Google’s global network and cutting-edge technology were integrated into YouTube, the user experience improved dramatically, and it grew into a massive video library accessible worldwide. YouTube boasts the world’s second-largest search system, following Google. Furthermore, its unique personalized recommendation system is a technology that is the crown jewel of YouTube. So, what concepts and technologies are actually used in these two systems? First, the core of a search engine is the algorithm that ranks the importance of the information being searched. The YouTube search engine’s algorithm first leverages YouTube’s unique characteristics. This, of course, refers to the fact that it deals with a uniform content format: videos. While traditional search engines gathered information from documents composed of text and links, YouTube collects additional information from videos. This additional information includes view counts, likes, average watch time, and comments.
In 2012, YouTube announced that it would place greater importance on average watch time than on view count. For example, if most users skip a video within 10 seconds, that video’s value and importance are significantly reduced. This serves as a good criterion for identifying videos that use sensational thumbnails to grab users’ attention. That same year, YouTube confirmed that it focuses on watch time rather than the percentage of watch time. For instance, a 10-minute video with an average watch time of 50% is considered more important than a 3-minute video with the same 50% watch time. Consequently, longer videos tend to rank higher. It has been 18 years since YouTube was acquired by Google. One of the reasons YouTube co-founders Steve Chen and Chad Meredith Hurley sold the company was that, at the time, their technical capabilities were insufficient to handle the growing volume of video streaming services.
